BPPV – I have what now?

100x31

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is the most common cause of dizziness and vertigo (false sense of movement) and is a disorder of the inner ear but what does that even mean?

    • n
    • Benign = not harmful

n

    • Paroxysmal = sudden onset

n

    • Positional = dependent on position

n

    • Vertigo = feeling of false movement (e.g. spinning or rocking)

n

About 50% of all dizziness in older people is due to BPPV

The inner ear helps to keep both your vision and balance stable when you move your head ad contains little crystals that pick up head movement and the effects of gravity.

n

In BPPV, these little crystals can break away and fall into the canals of the inner ear where they then cause false information about your head movement, which causes symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, nausea and imbalance, every time you move your head.

nn

There are many different spots those crystals can fall into, our team of vestibular physiotherapists are highly skilled at performing tests to figure out if you have BPPV and if you do, where the crystals have fallen.
