Spotlight on Research: ☀️ Vitamin D and BPPV ☀️
A recent study has shown that those with BPPV had significantly lower Vitamin D levels than healthy controls (whether it was a new or recurrent BPPV diagnosis)
n
nBPPV is the most common cause of dizziness, particularly in older adults and occurs due to calcium carbonate crystals in your inner ear breaking away and falling into the canals of the inner ear. This causes you to feel dizzy when you move your head.
n
nIdentifying low Vitamin D levels as a risk factor for BPPV can be helpful in seeking treatment early – both vestibular rehabilitation for the BPPV and supplementation for the low Vitamin D through your GP
n
The recommended daily intake of Vitamin D is 600 IU for those aged 19-70 years old.
n
Vitamin D can be found in fatty fish, dairy products, egg yolks, mushrooms and sunshine! ☀️If you are Vitamin D Deficient or on a supplement and get dizzy – see one of our team at Advanced Vestibular Clinics for an assessment now!
